OPEN ACCESS AI, metaverse and sustainability in the new organizational design
Description
Generative artificial intelligence and immersive environments, including the metaverse, are transforming organizational design. The adoption of these technologies goes beyond the introduction of additional tools and constitutes a comprehensive organizational design process that reshapes how work is organized, the skills it requires, and the ethical, security, and governance conditions necessary to sustain transformation over time. This perspective draws on two complementary theoretical frameworks: Galbraith's Star Model, which links organizational performance to the alignment of strategy, structure, processes, rewards, and people, and Rogers' diffusion of innovations theory, which explains technological adoption as a social process that unfolds in successive waves. Through nine chapters, the analysis explores the effects of these technologies on decision-making, human-AI collaboration, talent management, workspaces, and organizational learning, while examining associated risks, including technological dependence, algorithmic bias, human vulnerabilities in cybersecurity, and the absence of clear governance mechanisms. Organizational transformation is therefore understood as an ongoing process that must be developed and sustained over time through comprehensive organizational redesign, continuous investment in human capabilities, and the establishment of a responsible organizational culture, robust security practices, and effective governance mechanisms capable of preserving the trust of organizational members.
